Like other nonprofit institutions such as schools and colleges, museums, and performing arts companies, UC Press cannot sustain its programs from earned income alone. While University of California Press ranks among the top six university presses in the United States, it receives less than 10 percent of its budget from the University of California. An additional 85 percent comes from product sales. Private giving is essential to continue publishing and disseminating the highest-quality scholarship; in fact, two-thirds of new books published benefit from subsidy. With the leadership of the Board of Trustees representing the Southern and Northern California communities, the UC Press Foundation reaches out to foundations and individuals to make significant contributions to the development and dissemination of knowledge.
